“When it comes to physical therapy, there is a large spectrum of services available to those who need it,” said Jonathan Zecher, Director of Clinical Education at Focus Physiotherapy. “At Focus, we aim to go beyond generic exercises and modalities like hot and cold packs. A client’s unique issues call for a tailored, individualized approach. We take pride in providing that level of service.”
The desire to improve the practice of physical therapy propelled Jonathan and his colleagues, Chad Hobbs and Mandy Teng, to bring Focus Physiotherapy to life. In 2015, Jonathan and Mandy opened the doors at their first clinic and soon found that they needed a larger facility to operate at peak performance. And now, the clinic has reached a new milestone—a second location near Madison off Highway 72.
“We do things differently here,” explained Mandy, Director of Patient Services. “Our therapists focus on a set of values and standards when working with each patient. It’s much more than metrics and numbers. We want to empower our patients to take control of their own wellness.”
Brought together by their shared passion, the team at Focus is heading the charge in offering physical therapy that’s anything but “one-size-fits-all.” Instead, they strive to provide a customized, specific program for each client.
The Spectrum of Physical Therapy
Simply put, not all physical therapy is the same. This is a belief that the Focus team has brought to the forefront when executing patient care and designing programs.
In fact, the clinic currently has some of the only therapists in North Alabama certified in specialty treatments like the Schroth Method for scoliosis and Vestibular Therapy that is specific to treating issues, such as vertigo and dizziness.
“If you have lower back pain, the same ten exercises that worked for someone else may not work for you,” said Jonathan. “All of our therapists are trained in what’s called ‘manual therapy techniques.’ It’s a hands-on approach that aims to reduce pain, enhance mobility, and increase muscle function.”
With an extensive background in physical therapy—more than 17 years—Jonathan has experienced the discipline of PT from many perspectives.
“I’ve always had the drive to push the envelope when it came to physical therapy,” said Jonathan. “The best therapy experience comes when a positive clinical experience is offered in a warm, welcoming environment. We will certainly carry that over to our Huntsville West location.”
As Director of Patient Services, Mandy took the lead in creating a friendly space that’s attentive to patients’ needs at Focus.
“We aren’t just treating them [patients] as another person walking through our door,” said Mandy. “Our team does a great job of developing relationships. We get to be there as patients progress and attain goals they set for themselves. Whether it’s returning to their favorite sport or holding their grandchildren again, we understand how important it is to help make those goals reachable.”
In addition to investing in its patients, the clinic also puts attention on helping its therapists and support staff grow as well.
“Part of my job is to mentor our therapists and help them develop their clinical skills,” explained Jonathan. “When they join our team, they commit to a 3-5 year structured curriculum to advance their skills.”
“Exactly,” Mandy added. “We each spend time mentoring our team, not only in the clinical aspect of things but also in the business and customer service side. Our goal is to create a team where everyone is motivated and autonomous. That’s the kind of work environment we all want to build.”
Why Another Location?
“By expanding, we can serve a broader client base throughout North Alabama,” clarified Jonathan. “We felt like the corridor on Highway 72 was an ideal spot because it’s convenient for clients who may be driving to and from Huntsville for work. We will be in a spot that can serve patients coming from Harvest, Athens, or Monrovia.”
Jonathan further explained that physicians in the Madison area had been pushing for Focus to expand—they were ready to send patients their way.
“In regards to our growth, I think it’s a testament to the strength of the relationships we have built over the years,” affirmed Mandy. “Physicians want to send their patients somewhere they can rely on the quality of care they will get. We try to be the whole package here—targeted therapy, great customer service, and economical options.”
It’s Just The Beginning
It won’t be long before Focus expands even further across the North Alabama region.
“We have had plans of expanding since the day we opened in Huntsville,” shared Mandy. “This new location near Madison is just the first step in a much larger movement. We will continue to push ourselves and create more options for our patients. Their success is what makes this job so rewarding.”
